Vocation tier list: choose for the role you need

Thief and Magick Archer are strong damage-first choices; Mage is a top support hire. Warfarer rewards an established skill collection. This editorial tier list ranks roles, not timed kills or an official Capcom balance score.

Recommendations with the trade-offs attached

Tier / purposeVocationsWhy and what to watch
S / focused damageThief, Magick ArcherThief reaches weak points but manages stamina. Magick Archer has homing coverage; Martyr's Bolt spends recoverable maximum health.
S / party recoveryMageAnodyne, protection and debilitation removal fill a support role rather than winning a damage race.
A / flexible experienced playWarfarerMix normal weapon skills on one bar; requires unlock investment and loses other vocations' maister skills.
A / control and defenseMystic Spearhand, FighterSpearhand controls targets and charges a breakable party barrier. Fighter offers shield defense and counters.
A / committed heavy damageWarrior, SorcererKnockdowns or large spells reward safe openings; slower attacks need party protection.
B / specialist playArcher, TricksterArcher rewards manual aim and prepared ammunition. Trickster needs strong pawns and illusion management instead of direct weapon damage.

S means a strong recommendation for the stated job; A means effective with its trade-offs understood; B means more specialized setup. These are our qualitative recommendations, not a copied Game8 ranking or measured patch-wide DPS order.

Best starting class and best pawn class

For a forgiving first melee kit, choose Fighter and learn timed defense. Choose Thief for active evasion, Archer for manual ranged weak-point shots, and Mage for a support-focused Arisen. All four can be changed later, so the starting choice is not a permanent build commitment.

Fill the party's missing role before doubling an existing one. A Mage is valuable beside a damage-focused Arisen; a Fighter or Warrior can protect a casting Arisen. Pawns cannot use Mystic Spearhand, Magick Archer, Trickster or Warfarer.

Changes that affect these recommendations

Capcom expanded skill slots to six on September 2, 2026. The same update increased Formless Feint stamina consumption and added timed interactions rather than promising permanent automatic evasion.

Mystic Spearhand's Mirour barrier now distinguishes charged party casts from uncharged self casts, has durability and affects stamina recovery. Mage and Sorcerer gained Magick Barrier; Trickster gained Buoyant Brume. These facts inform the recommendations, but do not provide numerical proof that one vocation is always stronger.

Maister unlocks, enemy resistances and pawn composition can matter more than the tier letter. Use the individual vocation guides for actual unlock routes and skill substitutions. No new eleventh vocation is implied by these update additions.

Questions

What is the best vocation overall?

There is no single winner for every role. Thief or Magick Archer suits a damage-first Arisen; Mage fills healing support; Warfarer is for mixing already-unlocked normal skills.

Is this an official or benchmarked tier list?

No. It is an editorial comparison based on documented mechanics, with the role and limitations stated for every recommendation.
