Pawn specializations: tomes, effects and unlocks

Use a specialization tome from the inventory to teach your main pawn one autonomous talent. A new specialization replaces the previous one; it does not add another slot or change the pawn's vocation.

Base-game tomes and practical acquisition routes

Specialization / tomeWhat it doesWhere to start
Chirurgeon / Chirurgeon's TomeUses curatives in its inventory on allies.Help Flora in Medicament Predicament in Melve, then meet her in Vernworth.
Forager / Forager's TomeMarks enhancement-material locations.Return to Malcolm after The Heel of History and build affinity.
Logistician / Logistician's TomeMoves items between packs and combines materials.Help Kendrick through The Heel of History, then speak to him again.
Hawker / Hawker's TomeOffers to buy surplus inventory items.Raise affinity with a suitable merchant such as Bjorn in Vernworth.
Woodland Wordsmith / Woodland Wordsmith's TomeTranslates Elvish for the party.Befriend Kough, the innkeeper at Sacred Arbor.
Aphonite / Aphonite's TomeSuppresses most pawn chatter.Raise affinity with Eino near Eini's Home.

These are documented starting routes, not fixed gift-count guarantees. NPC progress and affinity can affect when the tome is offered.

Guardian: official effects and where to get it

Capcom added Guardian on June 10, 2026. A Guardian prevents oxcart raids while accompanying the Arisen, can repel smaller campsite attackers alone, and reduces larger attackers' health before the Arisen joins the fight.

Buy Guardian's Tome from the Nameless Apothecary in the Nameless Village, or obtain it as a reward from Claw Them Into Shape or Readvent of Calamity. Capcom says players who had already completed those quests receive the item in their inventory. This is a free-update addition, not an expansion-only talent.

Orienteer and Arcanist in Dark Arisen

Capcom added Orienteer on October 9, 2026. Gamer Guides' transcribed item text says it helps find campsites during whiteouts and improves meal effects. Published Dwayne trade-menu screenshots show Orienteer's Tome costing three Norgan Ducats in Norgan.

The same item database lists Arcanist's Tome as teaching autonomous use of grimoires in battle. Unlike Chirurgeon, this specialization concerns spell books rather than curatives; it does not change the pawn's vocation.

Orienteer is an exploration choice, not a combat healer. Chirurgeon is useful when you supply curatives; Woodland Wordsmith is useful for Sacred Arbor; Forager is useful during enhancement-material searches. Pick one for the current trip rather than treating every talent as a damage upgrade.

How to use, replace and recover a tome

With your main pawn present, select the genuine tome in the inventory and choose Use. The tome is consumed and the old specialization is replaced. You cannot teach or overwrite a hired pawn's specialization; hire a suitably configured support pawn instead.

The September 2, 2026 official update makes specialization tomes available at the Scrap Store after they have been used or discarded. Check Ibrahim's Special Finds rather than assuming the original merchant restocks. Do not confuse look-alike forgeries with working teaching tomes.

Mage healing needs no Chirurgeon tome. Anodyne is a Mage ability; Chirurgeon is about curative items, and Logistician may combine ingredients you wanted to keep unprocessed. Move important materials out of that pawn's inventory when necessary.

Questions

Can a pawn keep two specializations?

No. Learning a new one replaces the old specialization. Keep recovery options in mind before consuming another tome.

How do I recover a used or discarded specialization tome?

Since September 2, 2026, Capcom makes it available at the Scrap Store. Check the Special Finds inventory.

Does Chirurgeon unlock healing spells?

No. It allows curative-item use on allies. A Mage can already heal with Anodyne.
